It’s February which means it’s National Children’s Dental Health Month. It is recommended that every child visit the dentist by their 1st birthday or when their 1st tooth can be seen in their mouth, whichever comes first. Baby teeth are important because they help hold on to the future space that the adult teeth will eventually erupt into. Additionally, they are important for chewing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle for children.
Did you know that the number one disease in children is childhood caries/cavities? Research has shown that tooth pain is one of the leading cause that children miss schools. Thus it is important what their teeth are well taken care of.
With that said – what can you expect at your child’s first dental visit?
(1) With the help of mom/dad/guardian we will likely do a knee to knee exam and cleaning.
(2) We will educate you on how to care for your child’s teeth and discuss diet to attain optimal oral care for your child.
(3) With your permission we will apply fluoride varnish which is very beneficial in keeping those baby teeth strong and resistant to cavities.
Attitudes and habits established at an early age are critical in attaining optimal oral health throughout a child’s life. Below are some tips to continue to keep your children’s teeth healthy!
- Avoid sugary foods especially right before bed
- Do not put your child to sleep with a bottle
- Brush and floss twice a day
- Drink plenty of water (especially fluoridated water)
